History
Sheringham Golf Club was founded in 1891, with the original land donated by renowned Norfolk landowners, the Upcher family. The initial 9 hole layout was designed by Tom Dunn, and seven years later the course was expanded to 18 holes.
The club has a long and storied history, it's distinguished early membership including (entirely coincidentally) both Arctic explorers, Captain R F Scott
(Scott of the Antarctic) and Sir Ernest Shackleton, as well as renowned Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
What a 3 ball that would have made!
(Captain Scott reputedly conducted much of his early pre expedition planning and research from the warmth of the clubhouse lounge!).
In addition to his other club memberships down south, Conan Doyle was a prominent member of Sheringham Golf Club.
Indeed, after losing a particularly frustrating knockout match on the 18th green, Conan Doyle exacted his "revenge" by deciding to name Holmes' soon to be new arch nemesis after his opponent of that day- a certain C Moriarty!
The club has a proud history of hosting major National Ladies events, and in 2027 will host the English Senior Women’s Stroke Play.
In 1920, we hosted the English Women’s Championship, a tournament which became famous for the eventual winner, Joyce Wethered (generally regarded as one of the greatest female player of all time) who, after winning on the 17th hole, was asked how the passing train 'which puffed and snorted loudly' hadn't put her off her winning putt, simply replied 'What Train?'
Naturally 'What Train' became ( and remains) the name of the 17th hole!
The course has been periodically and carefully developed over the last 100 years. The Club have recently instigated a new long term course development plan under the expert guidance of leading golf course architect Martin Ebert, with the initial changes already implemented at the 14th and 16th holes.
