Hole 1 - ​Henry Craske

This relatively gentle Par 4 offers a chance to find your rhythm before some sterner tests to come. An accurate tee shot should avoid the three fairway bunkers, though your second is then likely to be played slightly above your feet. The elevated green slopes from back to front and is well-guarded by bunkers in front, a sharp run-off to the left and dense gorse both rear and right. You’re on your way!

Hole 2 - Town View

If our first allows a gentle start, the Par 5 second soon changes things. While there is plenty of fairway for the shorter hitter, those looking to go long face two fairway bunkers to the left and a large swale on the right. A standard second shot must avoid a difficult centrally-placed fairway pot bunker, but players trying for the green with their second, and even those coming in from a lay-up, will not want to explore the three greenside bunkers – or go over the bank at the back!

Hole 3 - Lifeboat

A deceptively benign-looking Par 4, the third hole’s fairway invites attack, but is ready to punish the wayward strike with difficult rough, bunkers and even the North Sea all waiting to gather any misdirected ball. A good tee shot could still leave you a challenging second to the well-guarded, 35-yard long green with two bunkers to its right. A slight ridge along the green adds its own final demands when putting out on this deceptive hole.

Hole 4 - Skelding Hill

Though almost 100 yards shorter than the preceding hole, Sheringham’s Par 4 fourth presents no less of a challenge. A decent drive up the right of the sloping (R to L) fairway should avoid the well-placed pot bunker to the left, while your second will be a semi-blind approach to a slightly raised green, well-guarded by bunkers on the approach, with a sharp run off to the right and gorse to the rear. Sounds daunting, but it’s fun!

Hole 5 - Fulmars

Our fifth hole, the highest tee on the course, delivers some of the most spectacular views in UK golf. An outstanding Par 4, a long straight drive should avoid left and right fairway bunkers… and the continuing threat of the North Sea! Another solid hit is then required if your second is to find the long, bunker-less green, guarded by a very big bank to the right and drop-offs to the left and behind.

Hole 6 - Old Hythe

Another elevated tee with wonderful views can make this Par 3 look a simple task. However, our endlessly varying sea breezes can soon dispel this impression! During the course of the year, everything from drivers to mid-irons come out to get ball to the sloping (L to R) green and avoid the two front bunkers that guard it.

Hole 7 - Pop Shop

A long Par 5, running alongside the North Sea from tee to green. The uphill tee shot (look for the marker post) requires a good drive to avoid the right-hand fairway bunker, though even the best drive is likely to leave a blind second shot over the brow of the hill and on to the downhill run toward the large green. Though beware bringing into play the two bunkers that lurk some 60 yards short of the putting surface. The long green can be challenge enough, without coming out of one of those!

Hole 8 - Pretty Corner

A delightful Par 3 marks your first change of direction on Sheringham’s constantly challenging course, as you turn back toward the Club House. Played slightly uphill to a green well-guarded by deep bunkers, club selection can be a poser with varying sea breezes often in play.

Hole 9 - Upchers

A wonderful driving hole, albeit with a blind fairway, makes this a terrific Par 4 to finish your front nine. There’s more room to your left than you may think as you stand on the tee, though the sloping (R to L) fairway will automatically gather your ball in that direction. A blind second shot (look for the marker post) is also a possibility, as the green nestles down at the end of the fairway. Bunkers right and left guard the sloping approach to a largely flat putting surface.

Hole 10 - The Warren

A tough start to Sheringham’s back nine, this Par 4 needs two big hits to get you to the green. Drive off downhill, over a shallow valley, onto the corresponding rise up toward the hole. If you think you can reach, your uphill second should be directed to the left side of the slightly sloping (L to R) two-tier green.

Hole 11 - Risebro

A classic Par 3 hole, requiring careful club selection to cope with swirling sea breezes and the deceptive dip over which you must play. The long green slopes significantly from back to front, while greenside bunkers and steep runoffs add to the need for full concentration on this very rewarding hole.

Hole 12 - Charity

A dog-leg (L to R) Par 4 that is a joy to drive from its elevated tee position, opening a wonderful open approach for your second from the gently sloping (R to L) fairway. Two greenside bunkers and prevailing winds can make the long apron and green a lot tougher than might first appear.

Hole 13 - Spinney

Another great driving hole, this slight dog leg (R to L) Par 4 brings a tough uphill second, even from a good drive. Keeping toward the right side of the fairway opens up the green a little more for that second, but beware the punishing gorse along that same side. The green itself is relatively narrow, with a front left bunker ready to punish any shots coming up short to that side.

Hole 14 - Dead Man's

A pleasing Par 4 with a semi-blind tee shot that should not present too much trouble, with most drives down the left side of the fairway opening up the approach to the green for a medium/short iron. Don’t relax too much though - the long green is cleverly guarded by greenside bunkers either side.

Hole 15 - Poppy Line

Welcome to the first of Sheringham’s ‘Poppy Line’ holes, running alongside the popular steam railway. This dazzling Par 3 is often played with the prevailing wind behind, so careful club selection will be rewarded. If in doubt, aim to play just short and allow your ball to run on over the apron to the green – too much club or a mishit can find you in one of the difficult greenside bunkers!

Hole 16 - The Pit

A classy short Par 4, played over a gentle valley, will look to the long driver as if you can reach in one. But for you, and those taking a second uphill shot and using the marker post for guidance to get there, watch out for the difficult greenside bunkers clustered around the hole. The large green slopes gently to the right, making putting more of a challenge than might initially appear.

Hole 17 - What Train?

Another wonderful Par 4, shaped from right to left and with the Poppy Line running alongside. A good drive just inside the right should allow your ball to hold on the sloping (R to L) fairway and leave a slightly uphill shot to the picturesque, raised green nestled into a wooded hillside. The green slopes front to back and has tough a collecting area to the right that, should you stray that way, can leave you with a challenging chip to get up and down.

Hole 18 - Shannock

Another of Sheringham’s famous blind drives makes our closing Par 4 a worthy climax to any round. Drive straight at the marker post – anything long and left might just find a nasty fairway bunker – and you should have an apparently simple downhill second. However, this is into a green that slopes away from you, as well as from L to R, and is guarded by a large deep bunker. Regulation is always a very honourable way to finish your round here!
